Transatlantic Danger: U.S.-EU Merger Talks Underway in D.C.

Transatlantic Danger: U.S.-EU Merger Talks Underway in D.C.

Written by

The first round of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations has been proceeding this week (July 8 through 12) in Washington, D.C. largely under the radar. Although there has been relatively little coverage of the confab thus far, European and American officials and privileged “stakeholders” are busily negotiating agreements on a host of issues that would, if adopted, radically transform America.
The TTIP is being billed as a trade agreement and marketed by the Obama administration and corporate sponsors as an initiative that will almost magically create millions of jobs and usher in wave after wave of innovation and prosperity. But as we have reported in our in-depth look at TTIP, “Secretly Trading Away Our Independence,” there is a stealth agenda behind this “trade” agreement; the ultimate aim of the TTIP promoters is the economic and political merger of the United States with the European Union. They say so in their own words, though usually not in forums for the general public.
“In TTIP, we have the opportunity to accomplish something very significant for our economies, for our relationship, and for the global trading system as a whole,” said U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman at the opening plenary session on July 8. Froman continued:

We have an opportunity to spur growth and to generate significant increases in the already substantial number of jobs supported by transatlantic trade and investment.
We have the opportunity to complement one of the greatest alliances of all time with an equally compelling economic relationship.
And we have the opportunity to work together to establish and enforce international norms and standards that will help inform and strengthen the multilateral, rules-based trading system.

In the last sentence above, we catch a glimpse of the real purpose of the current negotiations: “to establish and enforce international norms and standards” and “strengthen the multilateral, rules-based trading system.” International rules, with international enforcement.
As we have reported previously, the clear goal of the architects of the TTIP is to ensnare the United States in the same ever-tightening process of economic and political integration and convergence that has transformed Europe from a continent of independent nation-states into a supranational federation ruled by unelected and unaccountable oligarchs in Brussels, unrestrained by any constitutional impediments. When this process began in Europe decades ago, following World War II, wise observers warned that the promised trade benefits were a ruse to hide the real fact that every step forward along this path was a step for centralizing and concentrating power, while simultaneously stripping away local autonomy and national sovereignty. (See “United States of Europe.”)
Now the nations of the European Union are trapped, and many of its citizens are trying desperately to extricate their countries from the tightening EU noose. They are being forced to pay for bailouts for the big banks, corporations, unions, and government boondoggles. They are being forced to accept regulations dictated by Brussels bureaucrats over all areas of their lives.
The same kind of micro-managing-by-bureaucracy is being planned for the EU-U.S. “partnership.” Here is a list of the areas that are being negotiated in the current round of TTIP talks, as listed by the U.S. Trade Representative’s website:
  • Agricultural Market Access
  • Competition
  • Cross-Border Services
  • Customs and Trade Facilitation
  • Electronic Commerce and Telecommunications
  • Energy and Raw Materials
  • Environment Financial Services
  • Government Procurement
  • Intellectual Property Rights
  • Investment
  • Labor
  • Legal/Institutional Issues
  • Localization Barriers
  • Market Access and Industrial Goods Tariffs
  • Regulatory Coherence and Transparency
  • Rules of Origin
  • Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures
  • Sectoral Annexes/Regulatory Cooperation
  • Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises
  • State-Owned Enterprises
  • Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT)
  • Textiles
  • Trade Remedies
As sweepingly broad as this list may seem, we can be sure that it is merely a start, as the EU experience has plainly shown; if allowed to be established, it would soon mushroom to cover virtually every aspect of life.

Privileged “Stakeholders”: Phony “Transparency” and “Consensus”
Who are the folks crafting this new transatlantic “relationship”? In addition to government officials (led, for the United , by the U.S. Trade Representative and the State, Treasury and Commerce Departments), an assortment of corporate, industry, trade association, and NGO activist
“stakeholders” have been assigned special rights at the negotiating table.

These include:
  • Sierra Club
  • Friends of the Earth
  • Humane Society of the U.S./ Humane Society International
  • Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch
  • AFL-CIO
  • Consumer Federation of America
  • Public Citizen's Global Access to Medicines Program
  • Center for Science in the Public Interest

These and other left-tilting groups are supposedly balanced by the following stakeholder organizations, which are usually described as “pro-market”:
  • U.S. Chamber of Commerce
  • National Manufacturing Association
  • American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers
  • Grocery Manufacturers Association
  • Computer & Communications Industry Association
  • American Association of Exporters & Importers

While many of the players in this supposedly diverse cast will hold clashing opinions on a multitude of issues, they tend to agree on one fundamental issue: global governance, which is merely a euphemism for global government. The one side wants to see a global regime that would enforce global environmental and social policy, while the other seeks the alleged benefits of a global regime that would make regulations uniform and easier for businesses to navigate. Both are willing to sacrifice national sovereignty and all that goes with it — the Bill of Rights, the U.S. Constitution, checks and balances, states' rights —to obtain their Holy Grails. It does not appear that there is a single organization among the assembled TTIP stakeholders to represent the interests of national sovereignty and independence as bonafide goods worthy of contending for.
Some of the stakeholder organizations give the appearance of championing national sovereignty while actually pushing for even greater global controls. Regular readers of The New American will not be surprised to find Lori Wallach among the TTIP’s controlled opposition. As we pointed out more than a decade ago (“Organized Anarchy”), when Wallach was put forward as the leading opponent of the World Trade Organization, her main problem with the WTO is that she wants it to have more power over more areas of our lives! Wallach represents Global Trade Watch, a subsidiary of Ralph Nader’s Public Citizen. The Ford Foundation, a primary source of funding for numerous radical groups, has been one of the principal funders for Global Trade Watch.

Interdependence vs. Independence
On June 19, just two weeks before America’s Independence Day this year, and three weeks before the start of the current TTIP round, The National Interest, a neoconservative journal appealing to a wide array of Beltway policy elites, published an article entitled “A New Declaration of Interdependence” arguing for quick passage of TTIP. The article was co-authored by Aart De Geus, chairman and CEO of the Bertelsmann Foundation, and Frederick Kempe, president and CEO of the Atlantic Council. Both organizations are major boosters of the EU, TTIP, and most other globalist projects. Kempe is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), which has been the principal brain trust in the United States pushing for world government for most of the past century.
The highly influential CFR journal Foreign Affairs has likewise been busy lobbying for TTIP support among public policy and business elites. A July 10 Foreign Affairs article, “Getting to Yes on Transatlantic Trade,” and earlier articles such as “For Transatlantic Trade, This Time Is Different” and “Reviving the West: For an Atlantic Union”, are an integral part of the massive CFR lobbying offensive now underway to marshal support for TTIP, building toward votes in Congress on the matter next year.

OBAMA ORDERS FED WORKERS: SPY ON EACH OTHER

  • Watch lifestyles, attitudes and behaviors...
  • Odd working hours, unexplained travel...
  • Monitor co-workers stress, divorce, financial problems...
  • Track online activities...
  •
  • Those failing to report face penalties, criminal charges...

  • In an initiative aimed at rooting out future leakers and other security violators, President Barack Obama has ordered federal employees to report suspicious actions of their colleagues based on behavioral profiling techniques that are not scientifically proven to work, according to experts and government documents.
The techniques are a key pillar of the Insider Threat Program, an unprecedented government-wide crackdown under which millions of federal bureaucrats and contractors must watch out for “high-risk persons or behaviors” among co-workers. Those who fail to report them could face penalties, including criminal charges.
Obama mandated the program in an October 2011 executive order after Army Pfc. Bradley Manning downloaded hundreds of thousands of documents from a classified computer network and gave them to WikiLeaks, the anti-government secrecy group. The order covers virtually every federal department and agency, including the Peace Corps, the Department of Education and others not directly involved in national security.

Under the program, which is being implemented with little public attention, security investigations can be launched when government employees showing “indicators of insider threat behavior” are reported by co-workers, according to previously undisclosed administration documents obtained by McClatchy. Investigations also can be triggered when “suspicious user behavior” is detected by computer network monitoring and reported to “insider threat personnel.”
Federal employees and contractors are asked to pay particular attention to the lifestyles, attitudes and behaviors – like financial troubles, odd working hours or unexplained travel – of co-workers as a way to predict whether they might do “harm to the United States.” Managers of special insider threat offices will have “regular, timely, and, if possible, electronic, access” to employees’ personnel, payroll, disciplinary and “personal contact” files, as well as records of their use of classified and unclassified computer networks, polygraph results, travel reports and financial disclosure forms.
Over the years, numerous studies of public and private workers who’ve been caught spying, leaking classified information, stealing corporate secrets or engaging in sabotage have identified psychological profiles that could offer clues to possible threats. Administration officials want government workers trained to look for such indicators and report them so the next violation can be stopped before it happens.
“In past espionage cases, we find people saw things that may have helped identify a spy, but never reported it,” said Gene Barlow, a spokesman for the Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive, which oversees government efforts to detect threats like spies and computer hackers and is helping implement the Insider Threat Program. “That is why the awareness effort of the program is to teach people not only what types of activity to report, but how to report it and why it is so important to report it.”
But even the government’s top scientific advisers have questioned these techniques. Those experts say that trying to predict future acts through behavioral monitoring is unproven and could result in illegal ethnic and racial profiling and privacy violations.
“There is no consensus in the relevant scientific community nor on the committee regarding whether any behavioral surveillance or physiological monitoring techniques are ready for use at all,” concluded a 2008 National Research Council report on detecting terrorists.

The German foreign intelligence service knew more about the activities of the NSA in Germany than previously known. "They're in bed together," ...Snowden

Snowden Claims: NSA Ties Put German Intelligence in Tight Spot

    DPA
Democracy activists in Berlin hold signs demanding asylumn for whistleblower Edward Snowden in Germany.
The German foreign intelligence service knew more about the activities of the NSA in Germany than previously known. "They're in bed together," Edward Snowden claims in an interview in SPIEGEL. The whistleblower also lodges fresh allegations against the British.
For weeks now, officials at intelligence services around the world have been in suspense as one leak after another from whistleblower Edward Snowden has been published. Be it America's National Security Agency, Britain's GCHQ or systems like Prism or Tempora, he has been leaking scandalous information about international spying agencies. In an interview published by SPIEGEL in its latest issue, Snowden provides additional details, describing the closeness between the US and German intelligence services as well as Britain's acquisitiveness when it comes to collecting data.
    ANZEIGE
In Germany, reports of the United States' vast espionage activities have surprised and upset many, including politicians. But Snowden isn't buying the innocence of leading German politicians and government figures, who say that they were entirely unaware of the spying programs. On the contrary, the NSA people are "in bed together with the Germans," the whistleblower told American cryptography expert Jacob Appelbaum and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras in an interview conducted with the help of encrypted emails shortly before Snowden became a globally recognized name.
Snowden describes the intelligence services partnerships in detail. The NSA even has a special department for such cooperation, the Foreign Affairs Directorate, he says. He also exposes a noteworthy detail about how government decision-makers are protected by these programs. The partnerships are organized in a way so that authorities in other countries can "insulate their political leaders from the backlash" in the event it becomes public "how grievously they're violating global privacy," the former NSA employee says.
    Intensive Cooperation with Germany
SPIEGEL reporting also indicates that cooperation between the NSA and Germany's foreign intelligence service, the BND, is more intensive than previously known. The NSA, for example, provides "analysis tools" for the BND to monitor signals from foreign data streams that travel through Germany. Among the BND's focuses are the Middle East route through which data packets from crisis regions travel.
BND head Gerhard Schindler confirmed the partnership during a recent meeting with members of the German parliament's control committee for intelligence issues.
But it's not just the BND's activities that are the focus of the interview with Snowden.
The 30-year-old also provides new details about Britain's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). He says that Britain's Tempora system is the signal intelligence community's first "full-take Internet buffer," meaning that it saves all of the data passing through the country.
Data Remains Buffered for Three Days
The scope of this "full take" system is vast. According to Snowden and Britain's Guardian newspaper, Tempora stores communications data for up to 30 days and saves all content for up to three days in a so-called Internet buffer. "It snarfs everything in a rolling buffer to allow retroactive investigation without missing a single bit," Snowden says.
Asked if it is possible to get around this total surveillance of all Internet communication, he says: "As a general rule, so long as you have any choice at all, you should never route through or peer with the UK under any circumstances."
In other words, Snowden says, one can only prevent GCHQ from accessing their data if they do not send any information through British Internet lines or servers. However, German Internet experts believe this would be almost impossible in practice.
Metadata Provide Orientation in Sea of Data
The attempt to conduct total data retention is noteworthy because most of the leaks so far in the spying scandal have pertained to so-called metadata. In the interview, Snowden reiterates just how important metadata -- which can include telephone numbers, IP addresses and connection times, for example -- really are. "In most cases, content isn't as valuable as metadata," Snowden says.
Those in possession of metadata can determine who has communicated with whom. And using the metadata, they can determine which data sets and communications content they would like to take a closer look at. "The metadata tells you what out of their data stream you actually want," Snowden says.
It is becoming increasingly clear to recognize the way in which surveillance programs from the NSA and GCHQ -- including Prism, Tempora and Boundless Informant -- cooperate. The metadata provides analysts with tips on which communications and content might be interesting. Then, Snowden says, with the touch of a button they can then retrieve or permanently collect the full content of communications that have already been stored for a specific person or group, or they can collect future communications. But a person can also be "selected for targeting based on, for example, your Facebook or webmail content."

Fast Food Burgers Oozing With Parasites and Ammonia ! ! !

Fast Food Burgers Oozing With Parasites and Ammonia

Fast Food Burgers Oozing With Parasites and Ammonia

The world of meat-eaters got a rude awakening earlier this year when it was found that meat passed off as beef in the U.K. was actually horse meat. But, if you thought meat in the U.S. was safe from secret ingredients, the bliss of your ignorance may soon be shattered. A recent analysis into several different fast food hamburgers found relatively little meat, and a whole host of other “stuff”.
According to GreenMedInfo, the study was to determine what exactly Americans are eating when they consume their 5 billion hamburgers annually. The burgers, from 8 different fast food establishments, were analyzed by weight and then microscopically for tissue types.
Their analysis found that water constituted about half of the weight of the burgers, with water content ranging from 37.7% to 62.4%, with an average of 49%. Meat, what you’d expect to make up the majority of the burgers, was found to be as low as 2.1% in some cases, to the maximum of 14.8% in others.
If you think that those providing the least meat did so to cut costs and deliver savings to you, you’d be wrong. The researchers found that the cost per gram of hamburger ranged from $0.02 to $0.16 and was not related to the meat content of the burger. In other words, the cost was likely related to what was on the burger, the packaging, the fast-food company’s greed, or the name on the greasy bag.
In addition to a whole lot of water and a little meat (muscle tissue), the burgers contained connective tissue, blood vessels, peripheral nerves, adipose tissue, plant materials, bone, and cartilage. In other words, the burgers were a slew of animal parts with only brain tissue missing.
In two of the studied hamburgers, intracellular (Sarcocystis) parasites were found. Also present, ammonia—used in sterilizing the meat and creating what is known as “pink slime.”
If you really thought your value menu burger contained mostly meat, you haven’t been paying attention. Though this is an interesting study to be sure, it isn’t the first of its kind and it won’t be the last. Fast food makers are interested in profit. Any seeming thought to your health is purely done to increase their bottom line. Your best bet: to avoid these messengers of death altogether

    Secrets and Lies...

    Secrets and Lies

Every credit has its debit, every positive its negative. So for every secret there must be a lie, and every lie must be kept secret.
This is the currency of power today. Fiat truth.
We are not allowed to have any secrets any more.  And yet those who insist they must know the truth about us, who spy upon us to extract our secrets, tell us. in return, only lies.
It is a dangerous, corroding imbalance of power, because lies, like debts, compound.
    Living the lie
We all know the famous Goebbels quote,
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.
From Sadam’s weapons of mass destruction and missiles that could hit us in just 40 minutes of sexed up bullshit, to the stress tests that show us every bank is perfectly solvent and however many billions they launder they are never guilty and no one goes to goal because they are too big to fail and too connected to even question.
The eye of providence looks out and approves of what is done – Annuit cĹ“ptis.
But who does the all seeing eye, that sits atop  the pyramid of power on the mighty dollar bill, work for now? Is it really you and me?  That is what we are told to believe. But is it true? I think there are too many secrets but few of them are yours and mine.
The private dealings of the ordinary citizen are considered suspect and must, we are told, be rooted out. The secrets and outright lies of the corporate and governmental worlds, however – they are confidential. They are protected – behind razor-wire threats of  legal action and closed door tribunals of hand picked experts.
A few weeks ago I sat and listened to the former leader of the Conservative party, now an elder statesman of British politics, Michael Howard, tell an audience that governments need to lie. He is a clever man. He quoted Goebbels and then gave this carefully chosen example.
Imagine, he said, that a Chancellor knew that he was going to have to devalue the currency. The evening before the appointed hour, he is asked by a journalist if he is going to devalue. If he tells the truth and says yes, there will be a run on the currency and great damage will be done. So he lies. “No”, he says, “I have absolutely no plans to devalue at all.” And then next morning he devalues as he had planned.
“Was this not”, Mr Howard asked, “the right thing, the only thing to do?” And all agreed it was. The unspoken lesson that everyone seemed to accept was stability is more important than the truth.
I find this a very frightening notion.
But Mr Howard presented his lie well. He went on to quote the next, less well known line from the Goebbels quote.
The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie.
And this, he said smiling at us, is what protects you. The chancellor’s lie only needed to last a few hours. The nation only lived inside his lie overnight.
But now think of the lies we have been told since 2008. Our banking system and the  banks in it, we were told, were basically sound just suffering from a shortage of liquidity. And yet, in reality, it was not a problem of  liquidity, it was insolvency.
The liquidity lie had to be rolled over and the interest on it, paid. So another lie, that  bank assets were not worthless just ‘impaired’, had to be told and maintained. And to do that the truth had to be hidden, off balance sheet, in mark to model and offshore.
Our governments have spent trillions maintaining their lies and have forced us to live those lies for five years now. But there are costs. Living a lie is morally and politically corrosive, not to mention expensive.  Just this week, as reported in the FT, the Italian Treasury ‘uncovered’ a nest of lies. It appears that the Italian government, in the run up to joining the euro,  paid at least one of the big banks to help it hide the true extent of its debts by agreeing  derivative swaps. Greece used similar swaps to massage its debts. The now infamous Titlos agreement with Goldman Sachs being the best known.
The Italian agreements – there were several amounting to around €36 billion in value – would have been known to Mario Draghi who was at the time of some of the agreements at least  (1998-9) Secretary of the Treasury. Shortly after this (2002) he left the government and joined Goldman.
It now turns out the terms of the agreements were such that the Italian tax payer could face billions in losses. Of course those who will be forced to pay, were never consulted, not even told of the agreements. They were …confidential of course. Commercially sensitive and politically secret – so often bedfellows aren’t they? Kept secret from those who would be required to pay the bill when it came due.
Our leaders, our liars, haven’t bothered to protect us from the consequences of the lies at all. Too expensive. So austerity, disparity and stagnation are everywhere around us. Forced on us by those who suffer none of them, insulated as they are by wealth and power and privilege. Consequences are for little people, not their Betters.
Our ‘Betters’ have found Goebbels was wrong. You don’t have to protect the people from the consequences of the lies you tell them, as long as you can blame those consequences on someone else. On unforeseen global economic forces, on conniving foreigners who devalue their currency, or terrorists or whistleblowers. Or even the people themselves for taking on debts they couldn’t afford or on ‘necessity’ and ‘precedent’ – the bond holders cannot be made to pay – it goes against international precedent.
We, the people, need to strike back at the secret deals done between the elites of  the political and financial revolving door, and make it clear that we will not pay for anything about which we were not told.
Once the cry was, “No taxation without representation”. Today the cry must be, “No debt without consultation.”
    Suppressing the Truth
What Mr Howard did not quote is the next line from Goebbels.
It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
But again Goebbels has been superceded. Repression is so last century. Why repress when you can simply drown it out. All it takes is for the media outlets to be owned by a few powerful and like- minded friends. A few media moguls and corporate giants, whose plastic pundits raise their voices while the dolly bird presenters flash their thighs. It’s all so full throttle and frantic, and charged with desire and greed.
Anyone who disagrees is a conspiracy theorist. Anyone who breaks ranks is a whistleblower and whistleblowers are domestic terrorists, dysfunctional loners with personality problems and axes to grind.
When the truth is vilified, hunted, gagged and goaled, then the State has chosen to go to war with the nation.

    We are at war.

The Button Has Been Pushed…Ready Or Not

The Button Has Been Pushed…Ready Or Not

This week has started off miserably.  China had problems within their banking system last night as bank transfers, ATMs, online banking and wires did not work.  Europe announced that their E500 billion bailout fund for banks is no longer the case; they now say that 60 billion Euros will be the limit…retroactively.  To put this in perspective, Spain had already been promised 100 billion Euros for their banking system; I guess the money is not coming?  Our stock market has started the day down 230 points and the 10 yr. Treasury yield is now 2.64%, this is another .12 basis points higher on the day and now nearly 70% higher than it was back in April.
As I wrote over the weekend, this is “one gigantic global margin call.”  Please understand how many of these interest rate derivatives work.  When the rates go against you, “margin” must be posted.  By “margin” I mean collateral.  Collateral must be shifted from the losing institution to the one on the winning side.  When the loser “runs out” of collateral…that is when you get a situation similar to MF Global or Lehman Bros., they are forced to shut down and the vultures then come in and pick the bones clean…normally.  Now it is no longer “normal,” now a Lehman Bros will take the whole tent down.
To put in perspective what is happening, Zerohedge calculated that the Fed lost $35 billion this morning alone and $250 billion over the last 2 months.  The Fed only has (had) $65 billion of equity capital yet in just several hours they lost half of it…again…this is because they hold $3.5 trillion in assets.  This is the equivalent of a trader putting up $2 and buying $100 worth of assets, they have 50-1 leverage.  They may not even be the most egregious out there. There are derivative contracts that are over 100-1 leverage that must post collateral each day. At least the Fed doesn’t have to post any collateral against losses because they can be “trusted.”
Can you see what is happening?  The “button has been pushed” either on purpose, inadvertently or because “they had to.”  Banking laws over the last 3 months have been altered to allow “bail ins” where depositors lose rather than governments “bailing out” losing banks.  Do you think that these laws were changed by mistake, or inadvertently?  No, the laws were changed because they KNEW this was coming.  Now control has been lost in the sovereign government bond markets which are creating “losers” all over the place.  The problem now is that the entire world’s banking system is a chain, a daisy chain where if one goes down…they all go down.  Yes, yes I know, there are those running around saying “but we are hedged”…so there is nothing to worry about.  Really?  Someone somewhere is on the losing side of the trade.  With over a $1 quadrillion (with a big fat capital Q) derivatives market a 5% move creates over $50 trillion worth of winners and losers.  Do you know of any institution that could absorb even a small piece of this?  What if JP Morgan took only 2% of this loss, could they pony up $1 trillion?  Maybe… and only… if they could use customer funds would be my first thought.
Unfortunately it looks like the U.S. Treasury market is experiencing some forced selling.  This may abate and we may get a rally where everyone thinks “Whew, that was close.”  This happens almost always during a crash sequence.  “The worst is over” and confidence briefly comes back, this would not surprise me at all.  Don’t be fooled by this however as the detonation has already occurred and cannot be reversed.
I must confess that I had no idea that China’s banking system went into seizure mode until I woke up this morning.  I mention this because as you know I believe that when this comes it will be a Monday morning event.  Will it be China?  Japan or Europe?  Surely not the U.S.!  Will it be the banks?  Or will it be a broker, insurance company or even a sovereign govt. itself?  I don’t know and it really doesn’t matter because the result will be the same no matter where “the chain breaks.”
Please ask yourself this question, “If I woke up this Monday morning, today, in retrospect, and the world had blown up financially over the weekend where the banks did not open for whatever reason…would I have been ready for it?”  Maybe a bad question because NO ONE can ever really be ready for it but have you done everything that you think necessary?  This is a very real question.  What would you be doing right now if the banks didn’t open this morning?  Would you go to work?  Would you be going nuts and trying to scramble to figure out a way to buy food for the next week?  Would you be calling your broker to see if they could cut you a check (which no bank could cash until “later”)?  What would you be doing?
I could go on and on but you really do need to ask yourself this question now because the threat is not only real, mathematically this is what will come…whether you are ready or not.

Jacob A. Riis arrived in New York in 1870. As the economy slowed, the Danish American photographer found himself among the many other immigrants in the area whose daily life consisted of joblessness, hunger, homelessness, and thoughts of suicide. So when he finally found work as a police reporter in 1877, he made it his mission to reveal the crime and poverty of New York City’s East Side slum district to the world.

The resulting book, How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York, was published in 1890, and is still considered “a landmark in the annals of social reform.” Filled with pictures, sketches and graphic descriptions of the un-imaginable living conditions he found, the book forced the topic of tenement reform to the forefront of every New Yorker’s attention.
The photograph above is titled “Bandit’s Roost,” and shows 59½ Mulberry Street (Mulberry Bend) in New York City — an area that was considered the most crime-ridden and dangerous part of the entire city.
Riis pulled no punches. Indignant, pedantic, and at times racist (some believe he was simply playing on the biases of his target audience) his sometimes hard-to-swallow descriptions of the residents of the tenement district are paired with equally hard-to-swallow photography:

Riis and photographers he worked with were among the first Americans to incorporate flash photography into their work. Many of their nighttime photos were captured by removing the lens cap (thus beginning the exposure), igniting a batch of flash powder, and then putting the lens cap back on the camera.
Said to be inspired by Dickens and his writing about London’s poor, Riis’ work had a profound effect on the lives of those he photographed. A photojournalist who had himself lived in these condition, his book was the agent of social change that New York needed at the time.
Not to say that Riis was a saint. He separated the impoverished into two categories: those deserving of assistance and everyone else. He also never outright called for any government intervention, even though it came anyway. What most people seem to agree on is that his photojournalistic work was based on a genuine, heartfelt sympathy for those people whose lives he documented and helped to improve.

    It's Not About Terrorism Folks

    It's Not About Terrorism Folks

Since 9/11 the common mantra from our government at all levels is that "This is about protecting you from terrorists."
    This is a lie.
    I'm going to prove it.
The odds of being killed by a terrorist over a five year period are about 1 in 20 million. This means the odds are about 1 in 100 million annually.
Now that would equate to about 3 terrorist deaths a year in the United States.  There are, of course, monstrous spikes in that figure that make such a statement difficult to quantify accurately -- such as 9/11.  Then again there are plenty of years in which no American has died due to a terrorist incident on US soil (which means the odds for that year are in fact zero.)
This is the nature, incidentally, of highly-unlikely but catastrophically-bad events.
Human beings have a terrible time with these sorts of risks; we grossly overstate the likelihood that we will suffer the bad outcome, in general, when we consider it at all. This makes manipulating the public very, very easy when there is an ulterior motive for anyone who might want to exploit such a risk.
Let's take an extreme example -- asteroid impact.  There is in fact a rate of death by asteroid of about 1,000 per year.  However, this doesn't mean that 1,000 people every year get killed by an asteroid.  It means that about every million years one billion people die at once from an asteroid impact!
Tunguska, in 1908, is one example that but for location would have been catastrophic.  An area some 45 x 35 miles was leveled in a Siberian forest.  Had that rock fallen on a populated area the destruction would been cataclysmic.  It was by pure random chance that the impact occurred in an unpopulated area.
Chesapeke Bay, incidentally, was created by a (much) larger asteroid.  While this happened some 35 million years ago when the impact occurred it flooded the land as far inland as the Blue Ridge mountains!  Calculate the loss of life today from such an impact (perhaps 1/5th of the US population?)
The biggest problem with trying to argue that our "surveillance" is related to 9/11-style events is that humans, including Americans, suck at evaluating "long-tail" risks like this in the abstract but when faced with the concrete reality of the risk "in their face" right here, right now, today that tenor changes in a big hurry.  9/11 itself provides a perfect example; as soon as the people on United Flight 93 determined that they were passengers in a flying bomb they put a stop to it, even though they knew damn well their lives were likely to be forfeit in the process.  As such the "use by" date of turning an airplane into a flying bomb delivery system expired as soon as it was discovered.
So because of the wide range of impacts from terrorism a 1 in 100 million risk of dying in America from such in a given year may be statistically accurate but it ought to have some weighting applied for the wide variation in outcomes.  In other words, unlike an auto accident where the impact is likely to involve only yourself or a couple of other people, terrorist incidents often involved dozens or hundreds of others.  I'll therefore give you a 1 in a million risk -- 100 times the commonly-accepted actual risk -- for death by terrorism in a given year.
Now let's compare against some accidental and homicidal causes of death:
You are three times more likely to die if you ride a bicycle.
You are roughly 10 times more likely to die if you ride a motorcycle.
You are roughly 20 times more likely to die as a pedestrian (that is, walking)
You are roughly 50 times more likely to die in an auto accident.
You are four times as likely to die if you ride a horse.
You are twice as likely to die either boating or while riding in an aircraft.
You are more than five times as likely to die falling down stairs.
You are about three times as likely to die falling out of bed.
You are more than ten times as likely to acidentally drown, and twice as likely to drown in a pool.
You are twice as likely to suffocate in your own bed (accidentally) and about three times as likely to choke to death on your food.
You are about as likely to be accidentally electrocuted in your home.
You are ten times as likely to die in a fire (from either smoke or flames.)
You are four times as likely to die from a natural disaster (all causes.)
You are sixty times as likely to die from poisons, medications and similar causes, with more than half of that risk being from narcotics (both legal and illegal.)
You are more than one hundred times as likely to commit suicide (!!!)
You are 60 times as likely to die due to an assault committed by another person upon you.
You are 10 times as likely to die due to medical accidents and complications.
If you're a woman and give birth this year you are 200 times more likely to die doing so (in the developed world generally); don't even look at the numbers for places such as Asia and Africa (hint: It's 10,000 times as likely in Africa!)
Your infant, in the first year of life, has a risk of dying that is 50 times greater by accidental suffocation than by terrorism -- and is 20 times more likely to suffocate inhaling something that is not food.
Still afraid of the big, bad terrorists?
This doesn't even register on the scale of risks to your life folks.  It is an outright scam promulgated by the government that we are some sort of "extreme" risk from such an event.
Now does this mean we should not be vigilant at all?  Of course not.  For example should terrorists manage to get their hands on a nuclear device while the odds of them doing so in a given year are small the damage if they do so would be enormous.
But this doesn't change the fact that to set off such a device in the United States they first have to procure it and then get it into the country.
We can (and damn well should!) control the proliferation of such devices and material inside the United States, and we can do that without any material infringement of personal privacy inside the United States.
We can also control our borders.
But focusing on threats such as this mean that we must stop the illegal alien invasion.  It means we must apply vigilance in the places our Constitution permits and which raise no Constitutional concerns.
The problem with this path is that there are a lot of people who like all the illegal immigrants and porosity of our border in the general sense.  Rather than take both appropriate and legal steps to put a stop to it members of our government and intelligence apparatus argue that we must surrender our rights.
Sorry, but no -- and if you wish to argue otherwise then go through the lawful process of amending The Constitution to strike the 4th and 5th Amendments.
    Best of luck on that.
As I have often pointed out I can stop nearly every firearm death by gangs and similar.  I simply need you to surrender your 4th and 5th Amendment rights.  I will then go door-to-door, literally ripping apart every single home, apartment and other space large enough to conceal a firearm or ammunition and confiscate it all.  If I do this frequently enough and with enough vigor the firearm murder rate is going to drop through the floor.
Of course the price is that you now live in a police state -- literally.
This is unacceptable to the population and with damn good cause; there is no reason for me to suspect that a random person both has a gun and intends to (or is) keeping and using it for illegal purpose.  I therefore have no justification whatsoever in searching for and seizing said property.
    The same thing applies here.
The NSA has no reason to believe that every person who's call data is grabbed and kept has committed a crime -- or is about to.  Indeed the NSA itself claims only that one terrorist incident was possibly foiled on US soil by these actions.  That is, 330 million Americans had their rights violated and one terrorist was identified and stopped.
This is exactly the same rubric under which I would take all the guns and it is equally outrageous -- and unconstitutional -- that the NSA would grab all the call detail records.
By the NSA's own statements they have admitted to seizing the call detail records of millions of Americans who are not suspected of doing anything wrong -- not under probable cause, not under "reasonable suspicion", and not even under "just a hunch."
This is neither reasonable or Constitutional.  In fact it is flatly unlawful and a direct violation of the rights of all citizens of the United States under color of law or authority -- and thus an act for which both civil and criminal liability attach under 18 USC 242 and 42 USC 1983.
Further, as an instrumentality of the Executive, and as these programs have featured prominently as admitted in The President's "Daily Briefing", culpability for this program reaches all the way to the President of the United States as Obama cannot claim that this program and it's breadth and depth were "conducted by staff members without his knowledge or consent."
This is an impeachable offense and, in my opinion, an indictable felony for each and every member of the government involved in it, including those members of Congress who have known about this program and not only refused to stop it but deliberately appropriated funds for its creation, expansion and continued funding
